Animation Skills: The first 3 weeks.
As we didn't have blogs yet.
Our first week was a series of inductions, showing us around the uni and giving us some basic tutorials, which was very helpful. We also learnt some basic skills of animation. We discussed the 12 principles of animation, which is a system created by design.
1. Squish and Stretch 5. Follow Through and Overlapping action 9. Exaggeration
2. Timing and Motion 6. Straight ahead and pose to pose 10. Secondary Action
3. Anticipation 7. Slow in and out 11. Solid Drawing
4. Staging 8. Arcs 12. Appeal
These where created by a group of Disney animators in the 1930's, and are still followed closely by many animators still.
We then went on too create flip books practicing the first principle - Squish and Stretch. We where told to animate a ball bouncing up and down, and then to do a ball doing a curved bounce across the book. This I did find quite difficult to do at first, but it was a trail and error sort of thing. We where then assigned the task of creating our own idea using the same principle. So I decided to animate a larger man bouncing on a trampoline. This wasn't as successful as I'd of liked but thats ok. As it was a chance for us to learn the basics of animation.
